Since 1979, the SME Education Foundation has been one of the leading non-profits dedicated to the advancement of manufacturing education.

In September, the SME Education Foundation received a finalist award from Automation Alley for having the “Best Education Program of the Year.” The award honored the Foundation for its dedication to the advancement of grades K-16 manufacturing education – specifically for the Gateway Academy program and providing more then $29 million to youth programs, scholarships and awards.

History
Alvin and June Sabroff established this scholarship in recognition of the important role manufacturing education has played in their lives, and its vital role in the economic health of the country. Mr. Sabroff, a lifelong member and Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and an active participant in the SME Education Foundation, has had a career in manufacturing research, management and consulting for over 60 years, first at Battelle Institute in Columbus, Ohio and later at Eaton Corporation Cleveland, Ohio. In retirement, he leads the Metalworking Consultant Group LLC, a manufacturing engineering consulting firm located in Mentor, Ohio. He has been a strong advocate of manufacturing engineering education and was involved in establishing manufacturing research centers at The Ohio State University and Cleveland State University that provided students with real working experiences in manufacturing. This scholarship is to recognize, encourage and assist a promising student who wants to pursue a career in manufacturing engineering.
