Since 1979, the SME Education Foundation has been one of the leading non-profits dedicated to the advancement of manufacturing education.

In September, the SME Education Foundation received a finalist award from Automation Alley for having the “Best Education Program of the Year.” The award honored the Foundation for its dedication to the advancement of grades K-16 manufacturing education – specifically for the Gateway Academy program and providing more then $29 million to youth programs, scholarships and awards.

History
In 1989, the Executive Committee of SME Fort Wayne Chapter No. 56 authorized the creation of an endowment fund with the SME Education Foundation. The original intent of the Chapter 56 endowment fund was to fund educational based manufacturing programs in Northeast Indiana. In 2003, the document was amended to change the intent of the Chapter 56 endowment fund to support scholarships in the state of Indiana.
Criteria
A. All applicants must be seeking an associate's degree, bachelor's degree or graduate degree in manufacturing, mechanical, or industrial engineering, engineering technology, or industrial technology at an accredited public or private college or university located in the state of Indiana.
B. Scholarship applicants must possess an overall minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 point scale
C. When making the selection of recipients, the scholarship committee will give consideration to the following preferences:
D. The scholarship can be used only as a credit toward books, fees, or tuition.
