Since 1979, the SME Education Foundation has been one of the leading non-profits dedicated to the advancement of manufacturing education.

In September, the SME Education Foundation received a finalist award from Automation Alley for having the “Best Education Program of the Year.” The award honored the Foundation for its dedication to the advancement of grades K-16 manufacturing education – specifically for the Gateway Academy program and providing more then $29 million to youth programs, scholarships and awards.

Chapter 63 - Portland Uncle Bud Smith Scholarship

History

The Portland Chapter 63 Uncle Bud Smith Scholarship was established by the family, friends, and members of Portland Chapter #063 for the benefit students who are pursuing a career in manufacturing or related field. The Executive Committee of Portland Chapter 63 has authorized the creation of an endowment with the SME Education Foundation to support scholarships. This generous gift has been established to promote higher education in the local area.

Criteria

A. Scholarship applicants must be currently pursuing a career in manufacturing or a closely related field.

B. Scholarship applicants must possess an overall minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 point scale.

C. The scholarship can be used only as a credit toward books, fees, or tuition.

D. When making the selection of recipients, the scholarship committee will give consideration to the following preferences:

  • First preference - given to a scholarship applicant who is a child, grand child, or step child of a current Chapter 63 member.
  • Second preference - given to a SME student chapter member in Oregon or southwest Washington.
  • Third preference - given to students planning to attend a school in Oregon or southwest Washington, as this is the focus area of SME Chapter 63.
  • Fourth preference - will be given to applicants who reside within the states of Oregon and Washington.
