Since 1979, the SME Education Foundation has been one of the leading non-profits dedicated to the advancement of manufacturing education.

In September, the SME Education Foundation received a finalist award from Automation Alley for having the “Best Education Program of the Year.” The award honored the Foundation for its dedication to the advancement of grades K-16 manufacturing education – specifically for the Gateway Academy program and providing more then $29 million to youth programs, scholarships and awards.

Clinton J. Helton Manufacturing Scholarship

History

In addition to Clinton J. Helton's years of active participation in SME Denver Chapter 77, his involvement with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers have been far reaching. He has over the years staunchly supported and promoted SME with his time, talents, and money.

A long time member of SME, Clinton was instrumental in the chartering of a number of SME chapters including ones in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, organized the SME Student Chapter at the University of Colorado, and in 1979 established the Clinton Helton Scholarship Fund, which he donated money to every year. Before Clinton passed away in 2003, the total amount of the fund was about to exceed the $80,000 mark.

Criteria

A. Scholarship applicants must be full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program in manufacturing engineering, technology or related field of study at one of the following approved Colorado institutions:
  • Colorado State University
  • University of Colorado - all campuses
B. Scholarship applicants must have completed a minimum of 30 college credit hours and are seeking a career in manufacturing engineering or manufacturing engineering technology.

C. Scholarship applicants must possess an overall minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
