Since 1979, the SME Education Foundation has been one of the leading non-profits dedicated to the advancement of manufacturing education.

In September, the SME Education Foundation received a finalist award from Automation Alley for having the “Best Education Program of the Year.” The award honored the Foundation for its dedication to the advancement of grades K-16 manufacturing education – specifically for the Gateway Academy program and providing more then $29 million to youth programs, scholarships and awards.

Prof. George Schneider, Jr. Manufacturing Technology Education Scholarship

History

In recognition of the important role manufacturing education has played in his life Professor Emeritus George Schneider Jr., LSME, CMfgE, CMfgT has established this scholarship to benefit deserving students at Lawrence Technological University and Kent State University. Professor Schneider and his family arrived in Lorain, Ohio from there native Romania in 1955 with five suitcases and $250, little knowledge of English, and a family history of privation, separation, and loss during and after World War II.

During his years at Lawrence Technological University, Professor Schneider had a distinguished career in engineering education. He developed a manufacturing option for the Mechanical Engineering and the Engineering Technology programs. He also developed a Cooperative Education and a Continuing Education and Professional Development program for the School of Engineering. His writings include numerous technical papers as well as text books.

Professor Emeritus George Schneider received the SME Education Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 for his contributions to the advancement of manufacturing education.

Criteria

A. All applicants must be part-time or full-time student seeking a bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, manufacturing engineering technology or closely related field.

B. Two scholarships will be awarded one at Lawrence Technological University and the other at Kent State University.

C. The Dean of the College of Engineering will recommend two to three candidates for this scholarship on an annual basis.

D. The Chair of the School of will provide a letter of recommendation for the nominated student candidates. E. Student must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits hours per semester.

F. Applicants must have a College GPA of 2.5 or better on a 4.0 scale. G. Applicants must have completed at least 60 and less than 90 college credit hours of work towards their major.

H. Financial need is not a consideration in awarding this scholarship except when two or more applicants have equal qualifications.
