"Throughout high school I wondered if I would ever make it out from an area where there is no money, gang violence is high, drugs are common and where no one believes that any of us will make it past high school."
In her sophomore year, Alysha Budge had a 1.2 GPA. That was before she discovered her passion for designing and building, thanks to the School of Manufacturing and Engineering at Hawthorne High School.
She was part of a team that participated in the FIRST Robotics Los Angeles regional competition, receiving the second-highest honor – the Engineering Inspiration Award. She then went to the world championship in St. Louis, MO, where she and her teammates took second place. What’s more, Alysha has reaped the benefits of attending an SME Education Foundation PRIME® school. Graduating with a 3.0 GPA, Alysha received a PRIME®/SME Education Foundation scholarship and is pursuing her postsecondary degree at El Camino College in Torrance, CA.
