Who We Are

The SME Education Foundation is committed, and has been for nearly 40 years, to preparing students for roles as engineers and technologists in advanced manufacturing careers. Through scholarships and the SME Education Foundation’s unique Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education (PRIME®) initiative, students learn about STEM opportunities and are prepared and supported in their pursuit of those opportunities.

The SME Education Foundation inspires, prepares and supports young people exploring advanced manufacturing career pathways. Integral to this mission is the administering and awarding to deserving students scholarships enabling participation in associate and bachelor’s degree programs, creating opportunities for the next generation advanced manufacturing technicians, technologists and engineers.

The SME Education Foundation has provided more than $13.9 million in scholarships over the past seven years. In 2017 alone, the Foundation awarded more than $2.2 million in scholarships to 673 students.

Our SME PRIME Schools Initiative

Over the next decade, nearly 3.5 million manufacturing jobs will be needed, and 2 million are expected to go unfilled due an alarming lack of skilled, qualified talent.

The SME Education Foundation’s PRIME® initiative helps close America’s manufacturing skills gap by enrolling high-school students in an advanced manufacturing curriculum that prepares them for a lifelong career or additional post-secondary education. SME PRIME® fosters strong partnerships between high schools and manufacturers to develop tailored manufacturing education programs designed to meet local workforce requirements. Workforce assessments identify local manufacturing needs and an appropriate – and relevant - education curriculum is built to meet those needs.

With 46 SME PRIME schools in 22 states across the country, and with the support and engagement of more than 250 manufacturing partners, the SME Education Foundation has inspired and helped over 60,000 students to explore skills, training and continuing opportunities in manufacturing.
