Doug Doyle, General Manager, said that Dominion has been aware of the need to meet talent needs both now and in the future. “We’d been looking at different avenues to recruit; to acquire talent. We’re experiencing skill gaps in all areas of or business.”
Through conversations with the SME Education Foundation, and also Brent Brasure, Career & Technical Education Director at Fraser Schools, Dominion became interested in the possibilities of working with a local SME PRIME school – a school also interested in Dominion’s input as its curriculum was designed.
The SME PRIME program at Fraser benefits Dominion and other area manufacturers even as an opportunity is created for students. “Because of our aging workforce, we have a lot of experience and knowledge on the shop floor to share; to pass on to young people,” said Dan St. Croix, Controls Manufacturing Manager.
The opportunities are unlimited, notes Doyle: “We’re an integrated organization, so young people can cross train; investigate what interests them; learn about fabrication and wiring; programmable logic controllers and mechatronics. There is as much opportunity here as a bright young person can take advantage of.”
