A graduate of Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, Calif., Jorge Lara began studying engineering at El Camino College in the fall of 2015. He decided to pursue an engineering career because he likes to build things, and because engineering offers opportunities to branch out into different areas.
Jorge’s near-term objective is to learn different types of welding, with a particular focus on underwater welding. He plans to work as a welder until he achieves economic stability, then return to college to pursue his long-term goal of becoming an architectural engineer.
Jorge is thankful for his scholarship from the SME Education Foundation, which he says will allow him to focus more on his studies and less on how he is going to pay for them.
